This post will be updated from time to time.

I thought I'd make this Depoe Bay Kayak Fishing Guide to help people have a better experience when they go out in their kayaks. Note that I am not an expert, far from it, but these are just what I learned from fishing this great bay over the years. If you have anything to add, post a reply below.

Equipment list - not complete list:

  1. Dry suit - a must
  2. Visual signal device such as a flare gun
  3. Sounding device such as an air horn
  4. Life jacket
  5. 50 ft rope - in case you need to be towed
  6. Kayak flag
  7. Nav lights - bow & stern
  8. VHF radio (channel 80 for coast guard, call-in, call-out)

When exiting the bay, announce on channel 80 "Depoe Bay {vessel name/type} outbound"
When coming into the bay, announce on channel 80 "Depoe Bay {vessel name/type} inbound"
Be sure to announce each TWICE. Then wait for a response. About all of the time, I only people hear people announce it once, but I always do it twice.
You will get a clearance from coast guard if you are inbound, or when there is another vessel that is still in the channel.
If you are still in the channel, and someone is announcing that they are entering or exiting, reply back immediately!
On exit, if there are no response after about 5 seconds, you can exit slowly.
For kayaks, always exit single file.

SWELL FORECAST (look for 3 ft or under)

🔹 Surf forecast is my favorite: https://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Moolack/forecasts/latest/six_day
🔹 Surf Captain is another good one: https://surfcaptain.com/forecast/lincoln-city-oregon

WIND FORECAST

🟢 Besides the weather channel and NOAA, I use Wind Finder:

Map of Depoe Bay
Area 1, 2, and 3 are where I usually fish. Of course, there are many others like Government Point, which is a little further up north. Due to safety concerns, I usually stay close to the mouth and do quite well. Then go to 1, then 2 if it's slow.

The launch ramp has a $10 launch fee if you're trailering your kayak.

FISHING GEAR - coming soon. .....

  • ROD - I prefer shorter rods in the 6-6'6" range.
  • REEL - I use a 4000-6000 size reel.
  • LINE - 65# braid
  • TACKLE - 115#-130# ball bearing swivel (always us ball bearing swivel because they rotate more freely than barrel swivels). 1-2 oz jighead. For bigger plastics, 4-8 oz jigheads.
  • BAIT/LURE - Pretty wide open here. They practically will hit anything. Plastics, jigs, etc.
